A Spectacle of Herself

Laura Murphy/Contra Productions | 2023

A Spectacle of herself

A Spectacle of Herself by Laura Murphy blends circus, theatre, video, and spoken word to explore queerness, neurodivergence, mental health, identity, desire and the politics of visibility.

Juxtaposing her own lived experience with the modern day obsession of conquering space Murphy critiques the systems of capitalism and patriarchy, and challenges the mainstream narratives of spectacle and what it means for marginalised bodies to take up ‘space’.

A stand out feature of this multi award-winning show is the fully integrated creative captioning.

Blending physical theatre, clowning, and stunning displays of aerial rope, each vignette verges on wildness, and yet – under Ursula Martinez’s careful direction – the action is deftly controlled.
